Microsoft Excel Lesson #12- Cookie Dough Quadruple Bar Graph

Essential Question: How can I make a visual representation to support data I have collected?

3.     Technology Productivity Tools

b. Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.

By the End of Grade 7-

Students know how to identify, evaluate, select, and use collaborative tools to survey, collect, share, and communicate information within and outside the school community.

Students identify two or more types of information and communication technology tools or resources that can be used for informing and solving a specific problem and presenting results, or for identifying and presenting an informed rationale for a decision.

1st Step- Go to Start<Programs<Microsoft Office< Microsoft Excel 2007. 

2nd Step- Save the Spreadsheet.

Save the spreadsheet as"LASTNAME_FIRSTINITIAL_" COOKIE

3rd Step- SETTING UP CHART.

Use the information below to create a 5-column chart with “Team” in A1 “Brand A” in B1, "Brand B" in C1, "Brand C" in D1 and "Brand D" in E1 as the column headers. Type "Team #s" down Row A.

4th Step- INPUT DATA

Fill in data into spreadsheet.

 

5th Step- Math Function- Totaling 

In cell A10, type the word “Total”. Highlight from B2 to B9 and hit the AutoSum button, which a funny looking E. It is in the upper right corner on the Home tab of the ribbon. After you hit, it should place total in cell B10.

Highlight from E9 to C2. Hit the AutoSum button again. It will total the remaining 3 columns.

6th Step- Center Column/Row Headings & Bold Column/Row Headings

Highlight Row 1 by putting you cursor on the 1 and clicking. Hit the center alignment button and the B to bold the headings.

Click on Column A by clicking on the A. Hit the center alignment button and the B to bold the headings.

7th Step- Adding Borders

Highlight from A1 to E10. Right Click<Format Cells<Borders Tab<Select Outline and Inside. Hit OK.

8th Step- Adding Colors to Rows

Highlight from A1 to E1. Look for the Paint Bucket and Select a Light Color.

Do the same for A3 to E3, A5 to E5, A7 to E7 and A9 to E9, so they have color.

9th Step- Check the Set-Up the Spreadsheet.

In cells, A2 to A9 you need to make sure you have the word TEAM in front of your team numbers just like below.

10th Step- Creating a Quadruple Bar Graph

Next, create a quadruple bar graph. Highlight from A1 to E9. DO NOT INCLUDE THE TOTALS in ROW 10.

Go to Insert<Bar<2-D Graph.

Look for the new ribbon under Chart Tools<Layout<Axis Title<Primary Horizontal Title Axis<Title Below Axis. Click in the text box that appears on graph and type "Grams of Chocolate."

Look for the new ribbon under Chart Tools<Layout<Axis Title<Primary Vertical Title Axis<Rotate Title. Click in the text box that appears on graph and type "Groups.

11th Step- Add Data Labels

Look for the new ribbon under Chart Tools<Layout<Data Labels<Outside End. They will look funny until the next step.

Also, under Chart Tools<Layout<Chart Titles<Above Chart- add a title for the graph by typing in the text box- Grams of Chocolate Per Gram.

12th Step- Putting Chart Onto a Separate Page

Right click on the chart and go to Move Chart. Click the New Sheet Button and hit OK..

13th Step- Add a Header to Your Page

  • Click on Insert-Header and Footer
  • Click the Custom Header button.
  • Type your name in the left and class period in the right.
  • Click Print Preview button and check the graph.

14th Step- Save! Copy and Paste Into Folder on Z Drive
