Microsoft Excel Lesson #2- M&M Chart

Essential Question: How can I make a visual representation to support data I have collected?

NTES Standard:

3.     Technology Productivity Tools

b. Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.

By the End of Grade 7-

Students know how to identify, evaluate, select, and use collaborative tools to survey, collect, share, and communicate information within and outside the school community.

By the End of Grade 8-

Students describe how to use online environments or other collaborative tools to facilitate design and development of materials, models, publications, and presentations; they know how to apply utilities for editing pictures, images, and charts.

a. Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions

By the End of Grade 7-

Students know how to integrate data-gathering instruments (e.g., probes, electronic calculators, handheld devices) with spreadsheets, use data analysis tools within the spreadsheet to analyze the data, graph results, and inform conclusions drawn from the data.

By the End of Grade 8-

Students identify two or more types of information and communication technology tools or resources that can be used for informing and solving a specific problem and presenting results, or for identifying and presenting an informed rationale for a decision.

1st Step- Go to Start<Programs<Microsoft Office< Microsoft Excel.

2nd Step- Save the Spreadsheet.

Hit the Office Button<save the spreadsheet as "LASTNAMEFIRSTINTIAL"M&M”. 

3rd Step- SETTING UP CHART.

Use the information below to create a 2-column chart with “Color” and “Amount” as the column headers.

4th Step- INPUT DATA

A student opened a bag of M&Ms and gathered the following information:

Brown – 16,  Green – 8,  Red – 13, Blue – 2, Orange – 10, Yellow – 8

Place the names of the colors in column A and their corresponding amounts in column B. 

5th Step- Sorting Alphabetically

Sort the colors by alphabetical order. Highlight from A1 to B7. Look for the button on the standard toolbar the has an A, Z and an arrow that says Sort and Filter. Hit it and Sort from A to Z. It will sort your data alphabetically.

6th Step- Math Function- Totaling 

At the bottom of the Column A type the word “Total” and in Column B (next to it) we are going to calculate the sum. Highlight from B2 to B7 and hit the AutoSum button, which a funny looking E. It is 2 to the left of the Sort Button on the standard toolbar. After you hit, it should place total in cell B8.

7th Step- Center Column Headings

Highlight A1 and B1. Hit the center button. If you don't know what that is ask a neighbor or put your cursor over icons until you find it.

8th Step- Bold Column Headings

Highlight A1 and B1. Hit the B on the formatting toolbar to bold the headings.

9th Step- Adding Borders

Highlight A1 to B8. Right Click<Format Cells<Borders<Select Outline and Inside. Hit OK.

10th Step- Adding Colors to Rows

Highlight A1 to B1. Look for the Paint Bucket and Select a Light Color.

Do the same for A3 to B3, A5 to B5, and A7 to B7, so they have color.

11th Step- Creating a Pie Graph

Highlight from A1 to B7 Go to Insert> Pie> 3D> Exploded Pie in 3D.

Click on Layout Tab under the Chart Tools Tab. Look for Chart Title, Above Chart and type in Amount of M&Ms.

In the same tab, click on Data Labels> Outside End.

12th Step- Change the Colors of the Key and Slices of the Pie

Click on Format Tab under the Chart Tools Tab. Select a section of the pie graph and look for Shape Fill. Select the coordinating color to the M&M. Make the section of the pie representing orange section-orange and blue section-blue, etc. Change all the pieces of the pie to match the M&M's colors.

13th Step- Go to Page Layout Tab> Orientation> select Landscape.

14th Step- Add a Header to Your Page

  • Click on Insert> Header and Footer.
  • Type your name and class period.

15th Step- Go to Office Button>Print>Print Preview the document. It must print on a single page!

16th Step- Save, print the one page, attach the rubric and place in tray!
