Microsoft Word Lessons#1- Autobiography

Essential Question: Can I create a neatly formatted paper by using basic function of Microsoft Word?

NTES Standard:

1.   Basic Operations and Concepts

By the End of Grade 7-

3)       Students know how to use application features (e.g., columns, tables, headers and footers, borders, drawing menu bar) and a variety of other toolbars to format and publish content projects and products.

By the End of Grade 8

4)       Students know how to use the electronic dictionary, thesaurus, spelling and grammar checker, and editing features to maximize accuracy in development of technology-produced products.

STEP 1. Write an Autobiography because "I WANNA KNOW" about you. One option is to follow the format below. Another option is to be creative and organize on your own. You must have 5 paragraphs with at least 3 sentences in each.

PARAGRAPH 1- Birth

Sentence 1- Your Full Name

Sentence 2- Birth Date and Time

Sentence 3- Birth Place (City, State and Hospital)

 

PARAGRAPH 2- Family and Friends

            Sentence 1- Your Parents

            Sentence 2- Your Immediate Family and Their Ages (Brother, Sisters)

            Sentence 3- Do you live in a house, apartment …?

            Sentence 4- How long have you lived where you are currently living?

            Sentence 5- Who are your best friends?

 

PARAGRAPH 3- Education

            Sentence 1- Where did you attend Elementary School?

            Sentence 2- What is your favorite subject in school?

            Sentence 3- Who is your favorite teacher?

            Sentence 4- If you could change one thing about school, what would it be?

            Sentence 5- Do you plan on attending college? If yes, where?

 

PARAGRAPH 4- Your experience using the computer.

Sentence 1- Do you have access to a computer and the Internet at home?

Sentence 2- Have you ever created a Webpage or any other items that are currently on the Internet?

Sentence 3- Have you ever created a movie, an audio file or any other Multimedia piece?

 

PARAGRAPH 5-  Things you control and that you can change.

            Sentence 1- If you could change anything in your life, what would it be?

            Sentence 2- Do you have any control over what you would change?

            Sentence 3- What do you hate to do more than anything in the world?

            Sentence 4- Have you ever ended up liking something that you though you would hate? Explain.

 

PARAGRAPH 6-  20-Year Plan

            Whole paragraph- In 20 years, what do you picture your life like?

 

STEP 2. You Need to Add a Watermark You Have Saved to Your Computer

·        Go save a picture on the Internet that tells something about you. You do that by right clicking on the picture and go to Save Picture As... Make sure you know where you are saving your picture to.

·        Go to Page Layout, Watermark, Custom Watermark, Picture Waterwark and find where you saved your picture.

STEP 3. Inserting Word Art to Add Your Name as the Title

  • Go to Insert and WordArt. Select a style and type in your name.

STEP 4. Line Spacing

  • Highlight your entire paper.
  • Right click and look for paragraph.
  • Look for Line Spacing and change to 1.5".

STEP 5. Add a Header to Your Page

May only show in Print Preview.

  • Insert<Header<Blank (Three Columns)
  • In the Left- Type Your Name
  • In the Middle- Computer Applications
  • In the RIght- Type Your Period

STEP 6. Add Page Numbers

Placing page numbers at the bottom of the page is also something that is useful to the reader. May only show in Print Preview.

  • Click on Insert-Page Numbers
  • Place your page number at "Bottom of Page (footer)"
  • Choose Plain Text 3

STEP 7. Spell Check and Thesaurus

Spell Check allows you to catch most of the typing errors you may have in your paragraphs.  They will not catch errors with homonyms, i.e. their, there, they're.

  • Click on Reviewing Tab and click Spell Check.

Thesaurus allows you to make improvements in Word Choice. Make sure you choose a word that you know.

  • Highlight the word . Go to the Reviewing Tab and check Thesaurus.

STEP 8. After you have finished, save!

DON’T PRINT YET!    

STEP 9. Have another student proof read your paper!

On the computer, students need to read each other's papers looking for grammatical errors and punctuation errors.

STEP 10. Make the corrections suggested by proofreader.

STEP 11. Print one copy, attach a rubric and place in designated tray.

STEP 12. After you have completed assignment, you may go to....
