A good newsletter is most likely the most challenging thing to create. In addition to conveying a large amount of information in a small amount of space, a newsletter must still be visually interesting and cannot look like it has a lot of information— just like brochures.

Unlike brochures, which are generally designed once and simply reprinted when stockpiles are low, newsletters must be able to be redesigned and republished quickly. Quite often, newsletters are published weekly, biweekly, monthly, bimonthly, quarterly, or even yearly. Regardless of how often the newsletter is republished, it is desirable to create a standard “look” to help distinguish this newsletter from the others in the mailbox.

While this different “look” can be accomplished through special paper, success or failure usually comes down to design.

Consider your Audience

When faced with creating a new design, first ask your client a couple questions: Who is the audience? and How the publication will be produced? The answer will guide you in the direction you should go. It will help determine which software to use, which fonts to use, even which kinds of graphics to use.

Assessment

Since this is for an elementary school audience, the design should be much more visual, with more white space, shorter line length, wider leading and simpler fonts.  It’s important to not drive the client’s costs upward, so a two page design must still be used. A fun and friendly tone must still be preserved.

As usual, we start with a sketch.
